Mahuri, a sub caste of Bania in Bihar who occupy nearly as high a rank as Agarwalas in social estimate, like Sikhs, Mahuri strictly prohibit use of tobacco and a man detected smoking would be expelled from Community Another peculiar usage is that marriage are always celebrated in the bridegrooms house not at bride. Trade and moneylending are the proper occupation of the Mahuris. Some of them have acquired substantial tenures and sat up as landlords and Zamindars.

The trace of origin of Mahuris is yet to be explored prior to Mughal Rulers time, from where they have been separated from Vaishya community of Mathura .
On effort of finding our origin, few decades back, we came in contact with UP's Vaishyas known as Mahavar,Mathur,Mahaur etc. Seeing our nature, behavior, eagerness to expand the community they also became interested to know our origin and jumped into conclusion, seeing some of similarities in within them, Mahuris, somehow or the other belongs to UP originally and can be united with them.
URU TANTRA on national level organisation setted up with a symbol of balance in hand, to unite all India Mathur, Mahaver, Mahaud and Mahuris organisations for personal and business understanding, later on for total union. But eventually, great dissimilarities within these community made the gap widen. However, with the combined effort of them, a team consisting of President, Jharia Mahuri Mandal, Shree RAM DAS GUPTA, Shree DAMODAR PD.GUPTA [Mahuri(II)], and three persons representing Mahaur and Mahavers headed for UP, for a mission to explore origin of Mahuris.
The Team visited several places of U.P. and reached Mathura, where some very old aged persons known as BADE BHAIYA welcomed them warmly, knowing that some people from Bihar have arrived. From generations they were knowing that 700 families of them known as CHHOTE BHAIYA have left them in Mathura and went towards Bihar and lost, no where abouts were known to them till then. This fact written over stones buried beneath one of the well of Mathura, as they contemplated.
They described the reason for leaving them was Mughal Empire Ruler AURANGZEB then, decided to convert all Indian population to his COMMUNITY by smoking his left out HUKKA for religion conversion. Once, all the non-muslim Darbaries ( Officials) smokes the left out/lip touched HUKKA of AURANGZEB automatically will be considered and converted to his religion and population under Darwaries to whom they represent, also become desired religion. But the Darwari representing Mahuris was very strict, no illicit habit of smoking, drinking and non-veg eating was allowed under him, Mahuris then were really very sacrosanct. Before the date fixed for axing the population for conversion of religion, Darwari known as CHOTE BHAIYA left Mathura for ever with about 700 families together.
Darwari with 700 families reached to GAYA under the shelter of Subedar MALICK BAIYO, the widow of Sardar Baiyo, one time very good friend of DARWARI, saved the life of late Sardar Baiyo once at war field. Since, moving one place to another distant place at that time was very difficult but after considerable elapse of time, Mughal Ruler could traced the presence of Mahuri Darbari along with Mahuriflock at town GAYA(Bihar) under Subedar Mullick Baiyo's shelter. Within no time, troops were sent to evade Gaya, war went on for sometime, how long a Suberdar could have stand before emperor's huge troops, Subedar Mulick Baiyo died along with her entire family combating war. Terrible wrath of Emperor did not calm down here, search out were conducted massively to find out Mahuris, who eloped into interiors of suburbs and then in dense forest, villages, all of them scattered and mixed with Hindu population made them difficult to segregate, ultimately, they cooled down and returned back.
Mahuris splited into two segments, a handful of them again segregated for more than century, a sizable percentage of population moved to interiors of Giridih,an isolated place and forests then, which was again joined and become united at Barbigha meeting in the year 1926.

That is the reason, Mahuri population remained at Gaya, nearby villages(now converted to town)in different directions, upto suburbs of Patna, Kodarma,Giridih and deep inside places at that time.
